I Have a Dream | Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. | Oratory | Rhetorical | Literary Devices and Statements Students watch "How Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote the I Have a Dream Speech " (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIZLJMOhQCE), read the text of the speech, and then work in pairs or groups to discuss what they have learned. Students should be encouraged to make note of how Dr. King uses rhetorical and literary devices in his speech. (The video is just under 7 minutes and 20 seconds long.) HOW TO USE The first round of this lesson requires the students to read each term that represents an oratory, rhetorical, or literary device, and discuss how the "I Have a Dream" speech used these strategies. The second round requires them to respond to questions about the speech. CURRICULUM OBJECTIVES CCSS: RI.9-10.3, RI.9-10.3, RI.9-10.3, RI.9-10.3, RI.9-10.3 , NC; SS.12.H.1.3 Analyze primary sources in terms of the creator's perspective, purpose, the overall historical context in which each was produced, and their significance to the struggle for freedom and equality LESSON OBJECTIVE Students will study Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech and discuss the rhetorical influences on King’s speech, the oratorical devices that King used in delivering his speech and how a speech is similar to/different from other literary forms.
